On the night of December 12, 2009, Republican Al Hoang, known in the Vietnamese community as Hoang Duy Hung, beat Democrat Mike Laster by six points 53% vs. 47% (501 votes) to become the first Vietnamese American serving on Houston's City Council.

Hoang, who is a defense lawyer and current President of the Vietnamese Community of Houston, will represent District F, which has a large multi-ethnic immigrants population and covers almost the entire Southwest Houston area. Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S. with 2.1 million residents, has approximately 100,000 Vietnamese Americans - a majority of whom reside in the Southwest area.

Strong Vietnamese vote performance, esp. solid backing of Vietnamese senior voters, was key to Hoang's December 12, 2009 victory.
